I had an irritation in my eye when I came back to campus last weekend. Since many student’s don’t have cars it’s best to use the on campus LMU doctor’s office. The office is located on the side of the Burns Recreation Center. You can go to the Loyola Marymount University campus doctor anytime between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Once you schedule your appointment you come back at the appropriate time. You can usually get an appointment the same day if you get in there early. This shouldn’t be hard if you care about yourself.

In response to an email I got this weekend, I will talk a bit about the connections here at LMU. I mainly speak for the school of Film and Television because thats what I am enrolled in.
Much of the Film School faculty here is connected to the entertainment industry. Some teachers have passed experience working for companies and others are friends with directors and other film industry positions.
I suggest you build a solid relationship with all of your major teachers at Loyola Marymount University. The closer you are to your professors the more likely they are to help you out after you graduate. Make sure you are focused on what it is that you want by the time you are out of here. If you have the desire to do it, show your professors and they will gladly guide you. I also know a few guys who easily got internships from connections at LMU.
Other than that, there’s not much to say. The film program isn’t all too big so you shouldn’t have much trouble establishing yourself if you truly have a passion for what you want.

Second semester is about to begin at Loyola Marymount University. Let’s see what this thing brings me. The weather is great, having just come from a cold Connecticut winter. Although the change was nice, I can’t complain about being back. I will get some LMU pictures up this week now that I am back. Tell your friends about IsLMUForYou.com!

You know a little bit about LMU by now. You’ve clearly got some interest. The problem is…YOU FEAR THE JESUIT!
This post is dedicated to an email I got recently asking me about the religious life on campus. The person wanted to know how the Jesuit community affects the school life and activities.
Great question. I was wondering the same thing before I came to Loyola Marymount University. I was very surprised by the outcome. Believe it or not, the school isn’t very uptight. There’s plenty of parties and fun things to do that you would expect a priest to look down upon. The truth is, you’re paying A LOT of money to go here. Therefore, you are allowed to have some fun, and we all know that some fun requires a little sin.
Just like any college or university, there is plenty of drinking at Loyola Marymount University. You can figure out your limit on your own. The school knows that they don’t need to monitor you. However, there is one thing I disagree with: the strictness level of the authority at LMU.
In LMU dorm halls you will have a high chance of getting written up or documented for excessive noise and partying. The average Resident Advisor will not hesitate to jot your name down for a pat on the back from a supervisor…similar to a dog. Remember, everyone here is ultimately in it for themselves, and if someone can get credit for being a “good doggy” then they will.
Your best bet is to befriend the RA’s and find their weak spots. This art comes with practice but you should have it mastered by junior year.
If you are a major in any creative field such as film or animation, DO NOT fall short of your passion based on the judgment of others. I am an animation major at Loyola Marymount University and I have seen many things that your average Reverend would drop his jaw to. If you think your work might be controversial to a Jesuit Community, then screw ‘em! Do what you want because this is YOUR passion.
Overall, its not the most lenient school, but you have a decent sense of freedom here. Bottom line: You’ll have fun if you’re a fun person.

Here’s another great question I received in an email. What is the LMU life like? The answer all depends on where abouts on campus you are living, and more importantly AGE. You will experience the most social life during your freshman year at Loyola Marymount University. This happens mainly in the first semester since everyone is new and open to meeting new people.
As time passes you will have to put in more effort to meet new people. As a freshman you will meet people in the Lair cafeteria, the grassy areas outside of the dorm halls, and everywhere in between. It’s a piece of cake to meet any girl or guy.
As you move on to sophomore year, you will realize the campus is split a little. Some people will now have appartments on LMU campus while others are still in dorm halls. The Hannon and Tendrich Apartment Complexes contain their own micro community. Naturally people get comfortable in their own territory, like dogs. This primitive need is no different for apartments on campus because they hold plenty of room and include kitchens and bathrooms.
By junior year everyone you know will have their own apartment or off-campus house. You will meet new people much less frequently at this point and believe me, you will become very comfortable in your new living quarters. The upperclassman apartments on Loyola Marymount University campus are in great shape. I will get to those at a later time.
Overall, the life on Loyola Marymount University campus is pretty weak. However, you have to understand that there are roughly 5,000 undergraduate students, much of which are living off campus by junior year. Therefore, you have to make the best of it. My advice is to get off campus as much as possible. If you don’t have a car then take the lion express or a bus. You’ll figure something out.
I also suggest establishing your own small group of friends that you can hangout with at your dorm or apartment at LMU. This will keep you company as well as happy. The rest is up to you.

In a recent email, I have received the question: “what are the students like at Loyola Marymount University?”
Great question. Let’s talk a bit about the students at LMU. I will do my best, but unlike God I cannot see every student at all times. I’ll give this a try. I will break the average Loyola student into two categories: female and male.
The Average LMU Male
Be prepared…He’s got money and he knows how to use it! The average guy at LMU comes from a wealthy family. He is committed to a major. He seems to be mainly focused on getting his degree but he loves to party, hang out with friends, and have a good time.
The Average LMU Female
She’s got money too! So don’t expect to get a girlfriend based on the size of your wallet. She likes to party, but she seems very focused on getting a lot done everyday.
My Viewpoint
Nobody gets along with everybody equally. I’m not here to tell you about any conflict I’ve had with any of the LMU students. Just like anywhere in life, you will find people you like and you will find people you don’t like. The key here is to stick with people that make you feel good. If you can’t find any at Loyola Marymount University, then you have two choices: get a hobby, transfer, or dropout.
I suggest you take a chance and give the school a try. There are a variety of different people at LMU from all over the world. You’re bound to find someone you like.

If you are hungry for a quick bite off LMU campus, there’s a good amount of places to grab food. Fast food never fails so I’ll talk a bit about your choices.
Just a few blocks off campus on the corner of Manchester Blvd. and Lincoln Blvd. you have a KFC/Taco Bell combo restaurant. This place is ideal for a late night snack when everything on campus is closed. I recommend the Caramel Apple Empanada.
Hungry for McDonald’s? Cruise down Lincoln and you’ll see one on the corner of Lincoln and Mindeno. It’s connected to a gas station so feel free to fill up while you are there.
There’s also a Chipotle across the street in the West Marine Plaza. I will talk more about that place in a later post.

It’s the weekend and you’re looking for something social and fun at Loyola Marymount University. Get off of LMU campus. There are plenty of houses for you to go to. The owners usually charge a fee at the door which will cover your drinks. A good host will have a fire pit, hookah room, and maybe even some tasty drinks pre-poured to spare you the effort.
Like anything these house parties have their disadvantages. First off, they get crowded. More people leads to more heat, slower traffic flow, and less drinks. Once the party gets established it becomes a zoo. Your task is to get to the keg, dance floor, or nearest couch before the next guy takes it.
I also rarely see any food at these parties. An extra dollar per head can go a long way. This would at least cover some chips and salsa.
Also, take note of the fact that the houses are in neighborhoods with working humans. No one likes a noisy neighbor. However, you won’t want to stay at one house for an entire night anyways. So have a good time while you are there.

For all of you incoming freshman, you will find this review helpful in choosing your first dorm hall at Loyola Marymount University. The Del Rey dorm halls are now a couple of years old. I was among the first set of Del Rey dorm residents, so I know their quality.
The rooms are great. Bright symmetrical lighting illuminates the whole room with a brilliant glow unlike the dull halloween feel of other dorm halls such as Rosecrans. The doors are a bit heavier than the others, but they are also much safer. The carpets are fresh and tight to the floor.
I personally enjoy the symmetry of the room. The closets are built into the walls on either side of the door. You will have no trouble dividing the room into two equal sections. The windows slide open nicely so you can easily manipulate the temperature of the room as well as control the air freshness.
The elevators are slow. Your best bet is to take the stairs if you are in a rush. Otherwise, press the button…and wait. A bit of patience will pay off, especially if you live on the fourth floor.
The laundry is a bit of a task since you will have to leave the dorm hall and travel 25 feet to a laundry room. I suggest doing it with a buddy.
I am unsure about RA strictness levels . The Resident Advisors were very lenient when I was a freshman at LMU. I can’t guarantee the same for you. When its time to choose where you wanna live as a freshman at Loyola Marymount University, choose either Del Rey South or Del Rey North if you want high quality rooms. The RA’s change every year so that’s your only risk.

Loyola Marymount University campus is not very big. However, walking to and from your classes, cafeterias, and parking lots can get tiring. If you want to get somewhere fast, your best bet is to get a bike, skateboard, or scooter. You can easily park your bike in any bike rack on campus. They are all over the place. If you can’t find one, simply lock your bike to a palm tree.
As far as skateboards and scooters go, you can bring them to class with you. Professors don’t mind if you simply put them under your desk or against the wall. No problem.
If you choose to walk, you won’t have much of a problem. The weather is almost always nice and there’s plenty of things to look at. You can also read while you walk or listen to music.

LMU has a lot of money. The average student at LMU comes from a wealthy family. Regardless of your financial situation, you will be surrounded by others each with their own level of wealth. The key here is to understand your boundaries. If you are a less wealthy student like myself, then you need to budget properly. It is important that you know where to shop, how much to spend each week, what to eat, and who to hang out with. All of these factors will contribute to your overall financial situation at LMU.
Where to Shop
You need to know the prices of stores near LMU. For groceries…go to Ralph’s Supermarket. There is no need to shop at places such as Bristol Farms. You can find everything they have at Ralph’s for much cheaper. If you live in an appartment or house and think that Ralph’s has bad food, then you need to think again. It ain’t Ralph’s that’s bad…it’s your cooking.
If you need clothes you should go to places like Macy’s or Nordstrom Rack. The prices in both of those stores range to fit every college student’s budget. Stick away from places such as M. Frederick. With jeans costing two-hundred and hats costing eighty, feel free to buy clothes from these places once every lifetime.
Weekly Budget
Your best bet is to set a weekly budget. Know exactly how much money you have and what the consequences are when going over your limit. It’s very simple. You set the number and you stick with it. You base everything else around that amount. If you have the self discipline this shouldn’t be a problem. Otherwise, you need some practice. Remember, it’s your wallet.
What to Eat
If you are not eating groceries or meal plan food, then stick with places like Taco Bell, KFC, McDonald’s, Del Taco, In and Out, and Jack in the Box.
Who to Hang Out With
Pick friends that don’t blow through money day in and day out. There’s plenty of student’s at LMU. You will find someone who has similar spending habits as you. Again, this is your wallet…not theirs.

So you’ve ordered a magazine subscription, need to send a gift to a friend, and you’re expecting a package of cookies from your mom. Where do you go?
The LMU Mail Room.
When you recieve mail at Loyola Marymount University you need to go to the university mail room. Simply walk, drive, or fly to University Hall and head down to the first level. How many levels of U-Hall are there? Four. You start at the fourth if you are coming from the bridge. Can’t handle the walk like the lazy college student you are? No problem. University Hall has an escalator for each floor. However, don’t be surprised if one of the three escalators is broken. This tends to be a common issue for LMU. In that case, suck it up and walk down the stairs like a normal human.
Once you get down to the first floor all you need to do is take a right. You will see two glass-door enterances that lead into the mail room. From there you can figure it out for yourself.
